Why is my radiator gurgling?

Gurgling usually means air is moving through the radiator or heating circuit. A cool radiator top may respond to careful bleeding, but recurring noise, pressure loss or boiler shutdown needs an engineer to investigate.
Start with the pattern.
The radiator or nearby pipework makes bubbling, trickling or gurgling sounds as the heating starts.
Possible causes, not a diagnosis.
- Air is trapped in the radiator or pipework.
- The system pressure is low or has changed after bleeding.
- A circulation or filling problem is allowing noise to recur.
Check what is safe to observe.

Look for visible leaks around radiator valves without touching hot fittings.
Take the smallest useful step.
- Turn heating off and let the radiator cool before bleeding if appropriate.
- Follow the boiler manual after bleeding and monitor pressure.
- Arrange maintenance if the sound keeps returning.
- Do not bleed a hot radiator or keep adding water without finding pressure loss.
- Do not remove boiler panels.
- Call an engineer for recurring noise, leaks, low pressure or boiler lockouts.
